SLEEPY HOLLOW SPECIAL OLYMPICS GREAT SUCCESS!

The Sleepy Hollow community deserves tremendous accolades for their help in making the 2013 Spring Games a great success. With over 500 athletes and close to 600 volunteers, the Special Olympics was the best sporting event of the year.

Kim Kaczmarek and Bonnie Berry, the two main organizers of the event, did a great job. They, along with the athletic department, would like to say thank you – thank you – thank you!

As one of the student-athletes said “I can really feel Sleepy Hollow spirit!” Events like this certainly show Sleepy Hollow as the outstanding community it is.
———————————————————————————————————-
The varsity baseball team has been seeded second in the Class A baseball tournament. On Wednesday, May 22nd we will be playing a home game vs. the winner of Nanuet/Riverside. The game must start at 4pm because they are expecting evening showers. We must try to get the game in. Please come up to the high school and enjoy our team play. GO HORSEMEN!
————————————————————————————————

The Athletic Department would like to thank everyone who participated, donated or spread the word about the Modified Sports Golf Outing Fundraiser on Monday, May 6th at the Ardsley Country Club and at JP Doyles. The event successfully raised over $20,000 to support modified sports at Sleepy Hollow!

And a special thank you to Jim and Amy Bender for launching this great event and for keeping it going. It was a great day with so much community support. Again, thank you for your continued support.

‘Sponsor a Trophy, Reward a Superstar’: Teen Helps Special Olympics Athletes

Brendan Murphy, of Sleepy Hollow, is giving away 600 trophies to Special Olympics athletes next month. By asking people to “sponsor” a trophy, he is raising money to establish a ski team at his high school.

Brendan Murphy is giving away 600 trophies to Special Olympics athletes next month. By asking people to “sponsor” a trophy, he is raising money to establish a ski team at his high school.

If you ask a child or even a skilled athlete what it feels like to receive a trophy or medal after a game, he or she will tell you there is tremendous joy and happiness.

Brendan Murphy, a 16-year-old student at Sleepy Hollow High School, knows that feeling well. He has played lacrosse, soccer and has been an avid skier since he was 4 years old. He is also raising money to establish a ski team at his high school.

Now, the teen is working to bring that same feeling to a group of Special Olympics athletes who will be competing at his high school on May 18.

He is calling his project ‘Sponsor a Trophy, Reward a Superstar,’ or STARS. “I know when I receive [trophies] for placing, it always makes me feel good and I can’t imagine what it must feel like for them,” he said.

Sleepy Hollow High School will be the host of the Hudson Valley Special Olympics Spring Games, a track and field event that will bring about 600 athletes from all over the Hudson Valley, including Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Ulster counties.
Brendan has collected more than enough trophies to give out to each participant. Having started about two weeks ago, he has collected between 600 and 700 trophies, which are all neatly stacked and in abundance in his basement.

Most of the trophies were donated by the New York Irish Dance Company, based in Tarrytown. Brendan’s younger sister Caroline, who is a member of the dance company, was part of the group of talented Irish dancers who appeared on NBC’s America’s Got Talented last year.

Brendan said his parents and sister have been helping him refurbish all of the trophies. He would spend hours preparing them and placing a Special Olympics sticker on each trophy.

Kim Kaczmarek, a Sleepy Hollow High School special education teacher who also coaches the school’s Pioneer League Special Olympics team, said she was immediately interested in partnering with Brendan.
“I think it is a fantastic idea and I am so impressed that he came up with it and has followed through with it so passionately,” Kaczmarek said. “This is why I love working with teens – because if you give them the opportunity – they amaze you with what they can do.” She called Brendan an “incredible young man” and a shining example of the teens in the community who are more interested in giving than taking.

Through his project, Kaczmarek said Brendan would make all 600 athletes feel like winners when they leave the event with their own trophy. “He is making a difference by being a role model for young people his age that when you give, you not only feel good about yourself, but you make a positive impact on your community,” she said. We need more young people like Brendan.”

In addition to giving out a trophy to each athlete, Brendan has weaved in a second project within his STARS program. He is asking anyone willing, to help by sponsoring a trophy for $10. The money he raises would be used to establish a ski team at his high school.
“I’m hoping to get every participant a trophy and to really finally start a ski program,” said Brendan, who is a ski instructor to toddlers and young children at Butternut Ski facility in Great Barrington, MA. “It would mean everything.”

Currently, about 100 people have sponsored a trophy and in order for him to establish a ski program, he would need another 400 to 500 sponsors.

The Hudson Valley Special Olympics Spring Games will be held on Saturday, May 18 at Sleepy Hollow High School. The opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. For more information and to learn how to sponsor a trophy, email Brendan Murphy at tbmurphysh@gmail.com.——————————————————————————————————

2012 Football Sportsmanship Award

Sleepy hollow High School Awarded Inaugural Sportsmanship Award by Section I

Sleepy Hollow High School is proud to have received the first-ever Sportsmanship Award from Section One Athletics. Sleepy was chosen from among all 29 schools in Class A.

While the award specifically recognizes the football team, it is truly a celebration of the entire community, including players, coaches, parents, fans and the community at large. All of those associated with our football program demonstrated class, teamwork, ethical conduct and citizenship throughout the season.

Sleepy Hollow was named for its honorable play on the field and its chivalrous treatment of opposing players, coaches and referees. In addition, Section One noted the willingness of the Horsemen to go out into the community and serve, including participating in a clean up day in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, as well as visiting a local nursing home to spend time with the residents.

By consistently exemplifying the attributes of caring, fairness, integrity, and responsibility, Sleepy Hollow student-athletes, coaches, parents, and community members reminded everyone that success on the field is important, but dwarfed by success in life.

Congratulations Horsemen!

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL

The 2012 fall season has just been completed. It certainly was an exciting one in Horsemen country. The excitement stemmed certainly from the success of our teams because of the outstanding student-athletes our coaches are helping to produce. But, I want to make it clear that the fall sports season was enhanced so much by the enthusiasm and support of the Sleepy Hollow community. With this in mind I would like to thank you for all you have done to help make this season so enjoyable.

The support that we receive from the student body, our faculty, all our administration and the community was terrific. On behalf of the athletic department, our coaches and our student athletes, I would like to thank you for helping the spirit and pride of Sleepy Hollow to continue to rise.

The winter season is just about to start and I would like to extend an invitation to all to come and watch our winter teams compete. I am sure our success will continue and I am so excited to get the winter season started. The winter season will be kicked off with our 21st Annual Howard Godwin Sleepy Hollow Holiday Basketball Tournament on November 29th, 30th and December 1st.

Once again, thank you for everything. It is certainly appreciated.

Have a great Thanksgiving.

SLEEPY HOLLOW ATHLETIC TRAINER ACCEPTS WEST POINT POSITION

A special lady, Keri Foreman, our athletic trainer is leaving Sleepy Hollow. We all share in wishing Keri the very best in her new athletic position at the United States Military Academy at West Point. We are all sad she is leaving Sleepy, but are so happy for her as she starts her new career opportunity. It was a great 5 ½ years. Congratulations and the best of luck and success in your new position. On behalf of the Sleepy Hollow athletic community we want to congratulate Keri and wish her the best of luck and much success in her new position. We will all miss her.
Chuck Scarpulla
Athletic Director

TO THE SLEEPY HOLLOW SPORTS COMMUNITY:
It is with great difficulty that I must inform the Sleepy Hollow Community that I will be leaving. I have accepted a position at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Even though I do not want to leave this incredible place, this is a professional opportunity that I cannot pass up. I value the time I have been able to work with all of you over the last 5½ years. I can only hope that I have made as much of an impact on you as you have made on me. My experiences here would not have been as enjoyable or gratifying without many key people like Mr. Scarpulla and Ms. Longinetti, the entire coaching and support staff, parents, and most of all, the student-athletes. I will truly miss all of you, especially the athletes. Please know that I only considered leaving once I made sure we had a replacement I could trust to take care of my athletes. You will continue to receive exceptional care thanks to the talented and compassionate people at Sleepy Hollow Physical Therapy. Thank you for all of the wonderful memories. I wish you all the best with your future endeavors.

Yours truly,
Keri Foreman

Jen has netted 41 total goals this season, 9 goals from the 2009 season, which was cut short due to an injury, 36 from the 2008 season, and 18 from the 2007 season. Currently, she has 104 total goals. What a tremendous accomplishment! Congratulations Jen Angevine!

The Sleepy Hollow Athletic Department and the Sleepy Hollow baseball programs’ players and coaches would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the Sleepy Hollow Baseball Boosters for purchasing and helping to install the new screen on the outfield fence. PROUD TO BE A HORSEMAN

I just received this great news that I would like to share with all of you which made me and many others feel great about our school and our student-athletes. Yesterday as our Pioneer team, the most special team we have at Sleepy Hollow, was boarding the bus to go to our last soccer game of the season, a young track athlete came running up to the bus with two big boxes. She told our coaches they were for our team. Then she left to go to her practice. When our coaches opened the boxes they found that she had given to each athlete and the coaches a beautiful athletic bag that says Sleepy Hollow Pioneer Team and a fantastic hooded sweatshirt with the same logo and the name of each athlete on the back. What a tremendous feeling it gave our coaches and especially our Pioneer players. The young lady did this with a great deal of love and “just because”. Along with this incredible act of kindness, she and many other students come to the Pioneer practices to help because they want to be with the Pioneer team.

It is things like this that make all of us proud to work in this district — even on the tough days! Sleepy Hollow High School is a very special place.

GREAT DAY FOR SLEEPY HOLLOW ATHLETICS!

December 5, 2009 will be remembered by many people for many years. The entire day was filled with a tremendous amount of enjoyment and success.

At 10am a huge crowd of alumni returned to celebrate the dedication of the new Sleepy Hollow gymnasium where we honored Mr. Jack McCleery, a former teacher, coach and athletic director who spent 35 years of his life guiding the youth of the Tarrytowns.

At 1:30pm we started the consolation round of our 18th Annual Sleepy Hollow Holiday Tournament sponsored by the Godwin family. All the proceeds of this tournament go directly to the athletic boosters to support student athlete activities.

At 5:30pm the varsity girls’ basketball team played in the finals vs. Our Lady of Victory Academy and by the end of the game the Lady Horsemen had a four point victory. This is the first Holiday Tournament championship that we won since 1994. Everyone was happy and excited with the win.

At about 7:15pm, between the girls’ finals and the boys’ finals, the Sleepy Hollow athletic community honored Mr. Joe Golden, who has been an unbelievable asset as our school photographer. At no cost to the student-athletes, you can see Joe at every one of our games at all levels as he takes pictures of our student-athletes competing. Mr. Golden’s efforts have given our athletes a treasure that they will never lose. Thank you Joe for all you do for the student-athletes of the Tarrytowns.

The last big part of the day at 7:30pm was our boys’ basketball game. They fought hard and defeated last year’s Section One Champions Lincoln Hall by ten points. What a great victory. With the boys’ win it was the first time ever in the history of the Holiday Tournament that the boys and girls both won in the same year.

To Coach Romeo and his staff and especially the girls’ basketball players, as well as Coach Baxter and his staff and squad, thank you for your efforts and making everyone in the Sleepy Hollow community happy and proud of your accomplishments. December 5th was certainly a great day. Sleepy Hollow pride is on the rise.

FALL MODIFIED SPORTS

August 1, 2009
Welcome Modified Athletes and Parents

On behalf of the Athletic Department I would like to invite all 7th and 8th grade students to participate in our spring modified program. I have included some detailed information which should help you understand and give you some insight into each program in regards to time and transportation. I hope this information proves helpful.

• Modified Football – the modified football team will be practicing at the high school Monday thru Friday from approximately 3:30 to 5:30pm. Occasionally the practice will run late but they should be able to make a late bus from the high school gymnasium at approximately 5:30pm. This will not always be the case if the practice is extended.
• Modified Girls’ Soccer – the modified girls’ soccer team practices every day Monday thru Friday at Peabody Field. There will be a bus for our students, both modified and high school, going to Peabody at 3:30 and returning at approximately 5:30 to the high school.
• Modified Boys’ Soccer – the modified boys’ soccer team will be practicing at Washington Irving Elementary (upper field) from 3:30 to approximately 5:30 each day Monday thru Friday. There will be a bus provided from the John Paulding parking lot by the Administration Building each day at approximately 3:15pm. For approximately 9 years we have never had a return bus from WI and this procedure will continue for the fall 2009 season. Please make arrangements for pickup.
• Modified Volleyball – the modified volleyball team will be practicing in the junior high school gymnasium from 3:30 to 5:30 every day Monday thru Friday. On occasion their practice will be switched to the Washington Irving gym when necessary.
• Modified Field Hockey – the modified field hockey team practices right at the high school every day Monday thru Friday from 3:30 to 5:30pm. Since the girls are at the high school they can easily make a 5:30 late bus if they choose to do so.
• Modified Cross Country – the modified cross country team runs the trails adjacent to the high school. Their practices are usually shorter and should be over by about 5:15pm. On occasion we may transport the team to practice at our Cross Country course – the Rockefeller Estates – but even then they should be back on time to make the late bus.

I would like to inform everyone that every time a game is scheduled the game usually starts between 4:15 and 4:30 whether it is home or away. I would like to emphasize the fact that a home game should conclude about 5:45 to 6:00 and for an away game add additional time for travel back to the high school. It is the student’s responsibility to provide a way home because the bus will drop them off at the high school.

Looking forward to seeing you as you enjoy the Sleepy Hollow modified teams compete.

6TH GRADE INTRAMURAL PROGRAM

The 6th grade intramural program is designed very similarly to the 6th grade offerings that were established at Washington Irving Elementary School for numerous years. We are anxiously looking forward to continuing this program when we welcome our 6th graders to the Sleepy Hollow Middle School campus. The program will run three days per week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) starting at 3:15pm with the students dismissed a little after 4pm to allow time to change and get ready for the district-wide late bus at 4:20pm.

We will begin signing up the students on Wednesday, September 16th and will conclude on Wednesday, September 23rd. The first date of the program will be Tuesday, September 29th (not Monday – Yom Kippur – no school) and go through the end of November. Each day the program will differ. The fall offerings will include football, boys’ and girls’ soccer and variations of aerobic activities.

Mrs. Lisa King will be running the fall program and Mr. Tom DiLorenzo will be running the winter program which begins in early January with girls’ and boys’ basketball and either aerobic activities or volleyball being offered.

No student will be permitted to participate without turning in a Parent Permission Form at the time of sign-up (see below).

PARENT/GUARDIAN PERMISSION FOR AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS

This is to certify that I have given __________________________(name of student) permission to participate in the 6th grade intramural program from 3:15pm to 4pm. I understand my child will be able to participate in any of the sports that are offered but must sign up for each sport.

————————————————————————————
The spring sports season has just about started and all student-athletes are chomping at the bit to start competition. Once again on behalf of all our teams and coaches we would like to invite all of you to come and see our teams in action. We are certainly hoping for a warm and dry April so we can get right into our season.

All our teams have worked really hard to get ready for the spring season. Since January many of our athletes have been attending open gym programs as well as our intramurals (strength and conditioning). I am sure all the hard work will pay off and help make our teams more competitive.

I would like to inform you that at the present time we are half way toward meeting our financial goal in our gym banner project. This project will certainly help beautify the new gym as well as help to motivate our present athletes as we recognize our past and present athletic accomplishments. The Athletic Department’s goal is to increase Horsemen pride and bring back past traditions. We believe this will help encourage all our student athletes to excel and aspire to have their names or the name of their team on the gym wall. If anyone wishes to donate to the fund, any amount will be accepted and appreciated. You can contact the Athletic office or simply send a check to the Athletic Director made out to Sleepy Hollow Banner Fund. By the middle of May we are planning to start purchasing the banners.

Home Opener for Varsity Baseball a Big Success!

The home opener for the varsity baseball team and the pre-game activities were a positive addition to the game. As you all know, the varsity baseball team, on outstanding pitching performance by Jose Rivera defeated Irvington 1-0. Great job! The pre-game festivities, although very simple in nature was a great step in building a relationship between TNT baseball and our high school baseball program. Before the game we introduced both teams and made arrangements to have coach Joe Good’s ten year old TNT squad cheering our varsity players in their positions. The National TNT team really enjoyed the experience and hopefully will continue to be a big part of our community’s and our school’s baseball program. This certainly fit into the athletic philosophy build a solid foundation for your program from the bottom up.
——————————————————————————————
Another first for Sleepy Hollow Athletics:

The first girls’ golf competitor from Sleepy Hollow High School is Kelly Bender, a seventeen year old junior. Playing in a grouping with Clarkstown North, Clarkstown South and Brewster, Kelly has competed twice and has scored in the low to mid 40’s both times and we expect by the end of the season for her to be consistently in the low 40’s for Sectional play. The Sleepy Hollow Athletic Department is so pleased and proud to have Kelly represent us because she is not only an outstanding female golfer but a genuinely outstanding Sleepy Hollow student-athlete. We will keep you informed of Kelly’s exact progress but we truly believe she is going to go a long way this spring in female golf through our Section and hopefully New York State.

SPRING SPORTS PHYSICALS
DATE: FEBRUARY 25, 2009
(Wednesday after winter break)

Spring sports physicals for both high school and modified students are scheduled on February 25, 2009 in the nurse’s office starting at 8:30am.

FACTS TO KNOW

 All athletes can only try out if they are medically cleared by the nurse

 If an athlete has been medically cleared for a fall or winter sport and participated, they do NOT need a new physical. However, every student athlete must fill out a blue athletic participation form and have it signed by their parent/guardian. The students can get these blue forms from their coach, the nurse, or the Athletic Department. Once the form is completed and signed, it must be returned to t he nurse’s office only. The nurse will conduct a pre-physical and will sign the form clearing the student for participation.

 If a student did not play a fall or spring sport, they must have a sports physical. Once the blue form is completed and returned to the nurse’s office, if a physical is required, she will them assign the student a time slot on February 25th.

 If a student decides to get a private physical examination, he/she still must turn in a completed blue form to the nurse. The blue form must have the private physical examination paperwork attached to it. The nurse will have the school doctor check it and sign off. Then the student-athlete will be cleared to play.

ALL MEDICAL CLEARANCES COME DIRECTLY FROM THE SLEEPY HOLLOW NURSE AND NO ONE CAN BE CLEARED WITHOUT THE BLUE FORM CONTAINING THE NURSE’S SIGNATURE.

FIRST ANNUAL COACHES’ AGAINST CANCER NIGHT

I am very proud to inform you that the Sleepy Hollow Boys’ Basketball program, in conjunction with the Tappan Zee High School Boys’ Basketball program, was allowed to do their part for the National Coaches’ Against Cancer fundraiser. On Friday, January 30th at the games in South Orangetown the Tappan Zee Booster Club solicited donations for this most worthy cause. The Booster Club passed out red cancer awareness bracelets to all who donated. At the end of the evening over $250 was collected which will be given to assist 7th grade Sleepy Hollow student Lucas Goldbaum in his fight against cancer. Next year we will continue this tradition with another opponent here at Sleepy Hollow.

MODIFIED INFORMATION:
With the modified winter season recently beginning I would like to welcome you and invite you to watch our modified student-athletes compete. For your information the entire schedule is on our District calendar. Presently over 90 7th and 8th graders are enjoying participating in our winter sports programs.
Both the modified boys’ and girls’ basketball schedules will start the first week of January, after we return from the Holiday Recess. Most of our modified games will be played at WI and hopefully we will be able to bring them to the high school a few times. Modified basketball game time is normally 4:15pm and if there is a second game scheduled, it will be at 5:45pm. Presently they are rotating their practices, switching the girls’ and boys’ practices every two weeks from WI to the old high school gym. Practices will start at both sites at 3:30pm and go to approximately 5:30pm. When they are in the old high school gym they will usually end around 5pm.
The modified wrestling program is off and running and will be housed at Morse school each day from 3:30pm to 5:15pm. With a big turnout our student-athletes will have plenty of room to wrestle. This is a big improvement over last year when we had 35 wrestlers only able to practice until 4:30, so we could fit the varsity and jv in the high school wrestling room. Their matches will be held at the high school and we are anxiously awaiting the start of their competitions.
We are looking forward to seeing you after the holidays at our modified athletic events.
———————————————————————————————

Holiday Basketball Tournament - First game ever in the Sleepy Hollow High School brand new gymnasium will be at 5pm on Thursday, December 4th. The rest of the tournament schedule is as follows:

Friday, December 5th
(Boys) Nyack vs. Hackley — 5:15pm
(Boys) Lincoln Hall vs. Sleepy Hollow— 7:00pm
Saturday, December 6th
(Girls) Consolation Game — 11:30am
(Boys) Consolation Game — 1:30pm
(Girls) Championship Game— 3:30pm
(Boys) Championship Game— 6:00pm

Admission will be charged with all proceeds going to the Sleepy Hollow Boosters to support athletic programs for our students – $1.00/students, $3.00/adults. This is the only time throughout the whole year that we charge admission to our games. Thank you for your continued support.

Welcome Modified Athletes and Parents

On behalf of the Athletic Department I would like to invite all 7th and 8th grade students to participate in our fall modified program. I have included some detailed information which should help you understand and give you some insight into each program in regards to time and transportation. I hope this information proves helpful.

• Modified Football – the modified football team will be practicing at the high school normally Monday thru Friday from approximately 3:30 to 5:30pm. Occasionally the practice will run later but they should be able to make a late bus from the high school gymnasium at approximately 5:30pm.
For approximately 8 years we have never had a return bus from WI and this procedure will continue for the fall 2008 season. Please make arrangements for pickup.
• Modified Volleyball – the modified volleyball team will be practicing at Washington Irving gymnasium from 3:30 to 5:30 every day Monday thru Friday. On occasion their practice will be switched to the high school gym when our varsity and jv teams have an away game. The same bus that takes the boys’ soccer team to WI will take the girls. If a second bus is necessary it will be assigned.
• Modified Field Hockey – the modified field hockey team practices right at the high school every day Monday thru Friday from 3:30 to 5:30pm. Since the girls are at the high school they can easily make a 5:30 late bus is they choose to do so.

Sleepy Hollow pride is certainly on the rise.

SLEEPY HOLLOW ATHLETICS START IN A BIG WAY WITH 2 BIG WINS!!

The Sleepy Hollow Headless Horsemen played a tough football game to gets its first win in class A yesterday. After dealing with a rainout on Saturday the Horsemen had to refocus to play on Monday adding to the overall adversity they have faced since camp opened on August 20th. The Horsemen struck first on a td run by Kayzon Stovall after driving the ball down the field to take the lead 7-0. Spring Valley answered but missed the p.a.t. so the Horsemen still led 7-6. On the ensuing kickoff Bobby Small returned it for a touchdown adding to the Horsemen’s lead 13-6. In the third quarter Spring Valley scored on a tired Horsemen team putting them up 14-13. Sleepy Hollow showed great heart in not giving up and scoring again to take the lead 19-14. Spring Valley scored to take the lead 20-19 with about 4 min to go in the game. The Horsemen got the ball on the 40 and drove the ball to the 2. With 4 and 1 and 24 seconds left Coach Borys elected to go for it rather than kick a risky field goal from the right hash mark. The Horsemen got the first down by inches and Bobby Small ran in the winning touchdown on the next play. The victory came with class and lots of heart as the Horsemen hung in a close one.
“Both teams fought like lions,” Sleepy Hollow coach Steve Borys said. “It was really one of the best things I’ve ever been a part of.”

Girls’ Varsity Soccer won their season opener on Monday, September 8th against Keio Academy. The final sore was 0-2. Co-captain Jamie Bucci scored the first goal for the lady Horsemen midway through the second half. Several minutes later Co-captain Cathy Garro scored Sleepy’s second goal, assisted by Jamie Bucci. The girls’ soccer team has their second game on Wednesday, September 10th at home against Ardsley.

WOW — 16 STRIKEOUTS IN ONE GAME!!!

Congratulations to Matt Vallo on an outstanding performance in yesterday’s game. With Matt on the mound the Horsemen baseball team had a big win over Croton – 9-1. I believe this performance produced the most strikeouts in Sleepy Hollow school history. We have been checking to see if 16 strikeouts was the most ever recorded in a seven innng contest. I would appreciate it if any of the Horsemen alumni or anyone in the community would contact me at the Athletic Office on 631-3664 if you know of anyone who has ever had more strikeouts in one game. We believe this is a record for our school.

Record or not – what an outstanding performance by an outstanding student-athlete – Matt Vallo – 16 strikeouts is absolutely terrific. Great job Matt.
