The Horsemen lockup a winning record; Beat Croton-Harmon 4-2, May 23rd

The young Horsemen (5-3) team locked up their first winning record in recent memory with a dominant performance over Croton-Harmon.  Again, the horsemen team suited only 15 players due to a school field trip, still had the heart and attitude to take on a larger team.

The game was back and fourth the entire time, until 8th grade goalie Jay Ramirez stepped up and stopped 2 close range shots.  “Jay became a goalie today!  He is really learning how to lead the team, and pull his weight” said coach Veintimilla.  “Yeah, Jay was good today!” added team manager Christian Berenguer.  The Horsemen offense rewarded Jay’s hard work with 4 goals on the day.

The Horsemen look to close out their season at home on Friday against a tough Edgemont team.  Join us as we try to secure a 6-3 record on the season.

The Horsemen jump back into the Win column; 5-2 vs. Hastings, May 21st

The Horsemen (4-3) traveled to Hastings on Monday with only 12 active players; many players having to miss the game due to prior commitments.  Going up against a Hastings team that had 32 active players, the day looked like it might be long for the Horsemen.  After giving up the 1st goal of the game, the Horsemen countered with 4 consecutive goals to put their lead to 4-1.  7th grader Kyle McGovern had many opportunities for his first career goal.  He made due on that by scoring the teams 4th goal of the day on a great bounce shot.  LJ Garrant, John Michael Bogusz, Jorge Berenguer, and Tim Rachlin each added a goal.

The Horsemen close out their season with home games on Wednesday vs. Croton-Harmon, and Friday vs. Edgemont.  Join us as we try to lock up our first winning season in many years.

Monday, May 21, 2007 - Section 1 Tournament (First Round)

At Glover Field in Pelham, Pelham did all the scoring in the first quarter as the Horsemen found themselves down 0 - 3. Once again, the seniors would step up. And once again, the rest of the team would follow. Improving as the game went on seemed to be a parallel to the team’s improvement as the season continues to grow. Senior Co-Captain, Alex Silverman assisted three goals and scored one of his own. Seniors, Will Berkowitz and Dennis Bencosme each contributed a goal while John Campbell finished the day with three goals and a fast break assist to Brendan Chillemi (2 goals) on what would be the game winner.

The defense, lead by Connor Tompkins, Steven Amaro and John Bonanno forced many Pelican turnovers and contested most shots attempted by Pelham.

The victory earns the Horsemen a trip to the Quarterfinals. They will travel to Rye in an attempt knock out the #1 seed of the Class C tournament.

On April 30, 2007, the Horsemen met league opponent, JFK in Somers. After allowing two consecutive Kennedy goals inside the remaining 23 seconds of the game, Sleepy Hollow fought back and ended the overtime period with a transition sudden victory goal.

Very late into the 4th quarter, Kennedy scored on a fast break, unsettled situation with 23 seconds on the game clock to cut the Sleepy Hollow lead to 5 - 4. On the ensuing face off, a slashing penalty placed Dennis Bencosme into the penalty box for one minute, but not before Kennedy scored again with only 14 ticks remaining on the clock. Tie Game 5 - 5.

Kennedy lost possession of the ball, and Spencer White recovered the ground ball with one second left in regulation. Coach DiVico, with a heads up play, called a vital time out. The Horsemen would retain possession into the sudden victory overtime period.

Captain Alex Silverman was challenged with the duty of carrying the ball for the remainder of the penalty period, 46 seconds. Silverman dealt with a double team for what seemed to be an eternity. Finally, the penalty was released, but Kennedy was able to wrestle the ball away from the Horsemen. The ball crossed midfield only to fall into the stick of Junior close defensemen, Steven Amaro.

After scooping arguably, the most important ground ball of the season, Amaro found Senior John Campbell on the right wing, where he started his cut to the cage. DiVico would not call a time out this time.  Campbell scored his fourth goal of the day with a textbook bounce shot through the legs of the goalie. Game Over.

The Horsemen return home Tuesday to host Pelham. Come see the action live. You just might be in for another dramatic win.
