Sleepy Hollow’s boys’ varsity soccer team lost in the quarter-finals of the sectional playoffs on Tuesday, November 1st against New York State’s #1 rated soccer school, Port Chester. It was an away game played at SUNY Purchase and the final score was 4-1. This was a good performance by the boys. Sleepy played physical and tough all game long. Port Chester was tough, aggressive, and technical throughout the game. In the first half Port Chester scored two early goals. Sleepy stayed determined and was able to get back into the match with an unassisted goal by senior striker, and co-captain Matthew Praino. Port Chester scored early in the second half as well to make the score 3-1. For about twenty minutes in the second half afterwards Hollow played really well and was penetrating the Port Chester defense. At about the 25th minute of the second half senior midfielder, and co-captain, Christian Zhinin was injured from an extremely tough tackle by Port Chester and could not continue to play the rest of the game. Sleepy could not replace the play of Zhinin in the middle and about five minutes later Port Chester added a fourth goal. Sleepy continued to play hard but could not add to the score sheet. Players who stood out for Sleepy were Praino, Zhinin, junior fullback Kevin Ortiz, Senior fullback Jack Centra, and senior striker Brian Guananga. Hollow finished up with a 12-4-2 record. One major accomplishment was winning the Conference II, League C title. We had a great season and the school district should be proud of the way the boys represented the school district on the field. Both the boys and the coaching staff can’t wait to play again next year. GO SLEEPY HOLLOW!!!!
