If there ever was a tie that was considered to be a true heartbreaker, Tuesday, October 25th was it for the varsity girls’ soccer team. The Lady Horsemen played an unbelievable first half against Dobbs Ferry, the second ranked team in the League. It was Sleepy Hollow’s senior game and those who were present at the game were able to witness the intensity that Sleepy Hollow brought to the field. Sleepy was ahead by one at the half. Shortly after the start of the first half the Lady Horsemen netted their second goal. Both goals were scored by Senior Annelise Birrittella. One of the goals was assisted by Senior Jamie Bucci. As time passed Sleepy was unable to hold onto the lead. Dobbs Ferry scored shortly after Sleepy’s second goal and then again with five minutes remaining in the game. The game went into overtime and was called due to lack of day light. It was a very emotional end to a challenging regular season. The Lady’s start sectionals on Friday, October, 28th. The game is away at Walter Panis at 5:00.

On Friday, October 21st, the girls’ varsity soccer team played an amazing game against Dobbs Ferry. Midway through the first half Jamie Bucci received an amazing cross from Alexis Birrittella, Bucci headed the ball into the net. It was definitely one of the best shots of the season! Dobbs Ferry tied the game with 10 seconds to go in the first half. The second half was just as much of a battle as the first, but Sleepy had an unfortunate penalty called against them late in the game, which lead to Dobbs Ferry’s second goal. The final score was 1-2 Dobbs Ferry. Sleepy Hollow’s next game is against Hastings on Monday, October 24th. The game will take place at Hastings at 4:30. On Saturday, October 15th, the girls’ varsity soccer team tied Irvinton. The game was 0-0 up until the last 10 minutes, Irvington scored off of a direct kick. With two minutes to go, Irvinton was also called for a foul which lead to what Sleepy thought was a direct kick. Jamie Bucci shot the ball towards the top right hand side of the goal, the ball went off the goalies fingertips into the goal. After the Lady Horsemen celebrated, one of the officials stated that the goal did not count because it should have been an indirect kick not a direct kick. Of course some of you soccer fans are thinking, but if it touched the goalies finger tips and then when in, isn’t that a goal due to the fact that it does not matter what player the ball touches before the it crosses the plain of the goal. The correct answer to that would be absolutely without question, but unfortunatly in this case we did not receive the call. The game went on with score being 0-1 in favor of Irvington, until a penalty was called with two seconds to go in the game. Yes, two seconds! Jamie Bucci took the shot and scored, sending the game into overtime! The score remained 1-1 at the end of overtime. Sleepy was a little frustrated that they did not get the win, but more important, the girls knew that they played an amazing game and were proud of the effort that they put forth. Sleepy’s next game is against the Keio Unicorns on Wednesday, October 19th. The game will take place at Keio at 4:30. Thank you to all the fans that have been supporting the team this year, especially the crew that was on the hill behind the benches on Saturday! We look forward to your continued enthusiasm in the upcoming contests!

On Thursday, October 13th the jv girls’ soccer team had an away game against Alexander Hamilton. Sleepy won by the score of 2-1. Hamilton took an early 1-0 lead and dominated in the first half. The fantastic goal tending of Vanessa Onwe, who made several spectacular saves, kept Sleepy in the game. The score remained 1-0 when in the fifty-ninth minute, Alex Torres found the back of the net, beautifully assisted by Cara Plotkin which tied the game up at 1-1. In the seventy-second minute,  Katie Palacios stole the ball at mid field and dribbled around four Hamilton players, including the goal keeper, to score an amazing goal to put Sleepy ahead 2-1! Overall, it was an incredible team effort by the girls. Our next game is on Friday, October 14th against Dobbs Ferry at Peabody. Please come out and support our team. Go Hollow!
