JV Volleyball

Posted by mlonginetti on 1st October 2012

On Friday, September 28th, the JV Volleyball team notched its fourth win of the season by narrowly defeating Hastings 2 games to none. The first game was a real nail biter with neither team able to take a command of the game. Then at 19 – 18, sophomore Glennis Rodriguez served six straight tough serves for the Horsemen victory. The second game was also close, however Sleepy Hollow was able to pull it out in the end. In spite of missing its starting outside player, setter, and the libero, the rest of the team rallied for the win. The team will face Nanuet on Monday, October 1st.

On Tuesday, September 25th, the JV Volleyball team faced a tough serving Valhalla team and suffered its second loss of the season. Sleepy Hollow stumbled out of the gates with numerous serve errors to begin the game. In spite of the tough play from freshmen, Melissa Lamson-Lindsey and Whanda Camacho, the team could not overcome its poor service receive and service errors. The team hopes to rebound against Hastings on September 28th.

On Friday, September 21st, the JV Volleyball team travelled to Irvington and came away with a 2 – 0 victory. With strong serving from co-captains, Jessie Briante and Ryanne Galante, the team surged to an early lead and never relinquished it. Lauren Vallo and Clare Johnson, both new setters, have done a terrific job in running the offense and setting up their teammates. The team currently has a 3 – 1 record.

On Friday, September 14th, the JV Volleyball team won its second game of the season by easily defeating Tuckahoe, two games to none. Junior Kimberly Quispe’s solid passing and sophomore Ryanne Galante’s tough serves fueled Sleepy Hollow to the win. The team was inspired by the words of varsity co-captains, Abbey Titcomb and Breanne Tuohy, as well as the varsity team’s earlier victory. The team hopes to come back from a long break with a win against Irvington on Friday, September 21st.

On Wednesday, September 12th, the JV Volleyball team travelled to Woodlands HS and claimed its first victory of the season. In spite of the early season jitters and nervous energy, the leadership of the returning players, in particular, Xiara Rodriguez and Rosani Jimenez, helped to calmed the girls. Facing a tough serving Woodlands team, the Horsemen played solid defense and were able to win 2 games to none.

On Thursday, September 6th, the JV Volleyball team lost its home opener against Ursiline HS. With most of its starters moving up to the varsity team this season, this was the first start of most of the JV players. Lauren Vallo and Betty Capellan started as setters running a 4-2 offense. Kimbery Quispe started as libero, playing backrow of new middle freshmen, Sasha Smirnova and Melissa Lamson-Lindsey. This year, the team is led by co-captains, Jessie Briante and Ryanne Galante, both returning players. The team has a lot of young players and will inevitably face some growing pains, but the girls are remaining positive and look forward to a great season.

October 21st – on October 21st, the JV volleyball team lost is final game of the season against a determined Dobbs Ferry team. Although both sets were very close, Sleepy Hollow was on the losing end of both games – 25-23 and 26-24. Lauren Vallo was the setter for the third straight game and continued to show improvement. The outside hitters – Shaylin Best and Katy Kochnowski – both played solid games. Maggie Miles also played a good game playing both outside hitter and setter; she shows great potential as a volleyball player. The girls were upset at the loss, particulary to an opponent they had defeated earlier in the season. However, the girls are determined to learn from the experience and devote themselves to improving and working during the off season. The Sleepy Hollow jv team had a great season finishing with a record of 7 – 3.

October 18th – the Sleepy Hollow jv volleyball team began Spirit Week with a victory over the much-improved Irvington Bulldogs. The girls got off to a fast start behind the strong serving of Shaylin Best and Johanna Cepeda. Johanna started out as a setter, but she has found her niche as the Libero which better suits her energy and aggressive style. Ryanne Galante also contributed with her consistent serves and play. After jumping out to an early lead, the girls did not let up and continued to play hard easily winning the first game 25-15. Clare Johnson and Lauren Vallo made their debut as setters and did a fine job. The team has shown a tremendous work ethic and a desire to improve.
