What makes an author’s work come alive? How does an author use his or her imagination to discover new ways of thinking about the world? What helps the author’s voice to be heard? One way is by using language in creative and unusual ways. This creative word play is known as figurative language. Ms. Carty and Mrs. Elmore’s ELA sixth grade students know three things for sure. Students know that the use of figurative language, colorful language and the incorporation of vocabulary help an author’s words “leap off the page.” As a culminating activity, the students worked in cooperative groups to create impressive PowerPoint presentations. Students wrote about the ins and outs of literary devices and techniques authors use to make their writing more exciting. What’s that? What did you ask? Just how do they do it, you ask? Yes, of course, that’s right…creatively and “figuratively!” Enjoy the presentations.
