Personification Poems

May 12th, 2007

Personification is a poetic device where a poet makes an object act like a person in order to make it “come to life.” We picked a random picture card and paired off in small groups to make the object “come to life.” We bet when you read our poems you’ll never see these ordinary objects in the same way again!

Lawn Mower: A Personification Poem

By Hannah and Samantha

I am like a baby eating up old grass

And spitting out newer, cleaner grass.

I am a cleaning, seatless vacuum

Vroom, Vroom…

I am like a gardener on roller skates

I clean up the dirty grass

While I skate on your lawn.

I’m like a hairdresser-

I give the grass a funky new ‘do!

When I’m done I say,

“Don’t ride your bike on the grass!”

Pencil Sharpener: A Personification Poem

Pencil Sharpener: A Personification Poem

By Dalvin and Aaron

I have teeth that gobble up pencil lead

I make the sound of a person chewing carrots

Crrrunch, Crrrunch

I have an arm like a pitcher

winding up in baseball-

ready to sharpen!

My pencil sharpener holder

throws up the shavings

like a person with an upset stomach.

I have 8 mouths like a monster

eating up pencils and grinding them up

The pencil sharpener says, “I’M HUNGRY! GIVE ME MORE!!!”

Snowplow: A Personification Poem

Snowplow: A Personification Poem

By Serena and Natalie

I split out salt like a salt shaker.

I clean snow like a cleaning lady.

I sweep it aside,

Making little mountains of snow

for kids to jump in.

I am like a broom-

My job is to sweep up the snowy mess.

Once I’m done, the streets are clear

And kids can back to school.

“Ohhh man!”

I am a snowplow.

Stapler: A Personification Poem

Stapler: A Personification Poem

By Cris, Manny and Jessica

I can stitch paper together

Like a doctor stitching patients.

I have sharp, metal teeth

That bite through the paper.

I eat lots of paper at one time

Like a baby shoving Cheerios in his mouth.

I am a stapler.

Vacuum: A Personification Poem

Vacuum: A Personification Poem

By James, Samantha, Atesh, and Xavier

A vacuum is like a cleaning lady robot.

A vacuum is like Danny Tanner on Full House saying,

“Don’t walk on the carpet! I just finished cleaning!”

It munches and gobbles up crumbs and dust bunnies!

HmmmmGrrrrrrHmmmmGrrrrr…

Growling at dirt

Plug me in and watch me go!

Onomotopoeia Poems

May 12th, 2007

Onomatopoeia is a poetic device were a poet uses “sound effect words.” We paired up to write poems that describe different settings at Morse School. While reading our poems, try to imagine yourself at the scene! Do you hear the students stomping to the beat in music? Jump roping at P.E? Paint splattering at art? Chit chatting in the morning in the auditorium? Playing 4 Square outside at recess?
