Mrs. DiNome’s general music students transformed into composers through a unit of piano composition. Students in Mrs. D’s classes were taught piano introduction, form and composition. Ninety percent of the classes had never played piano before. Students performed their compositions in the lobby during homeroom for all to hear! The Washington Irving Vocal ensemble will have the opportunity to experience how a recording studio works, record their voices and return with their very own CD!
Mrs. DiNome has been taking the vocalists to record for the past 10 years.
It is an amazing musical experience for our vocalists!

Young Peoples Chorus of NYC

This web site is home of the composer of many of our songs that we rehearse and perform in our chorus.
Tell me a little about who Fransisco Nunez is and what type of chorus does he run?

The Star Spangled Banner
About the Song:

The Inspiration
The song of our nation was penned by Washington attorney Francis Scott Key at a dramatic moment during the War of 1812. On the night of September 13, 1814, Key watched as our country was attacked by the British navy at Fort McHenry. After watching the rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting in air throughout the night, dawn broke. Key was expecting to find Baltimore firmly under British control, but was stunned to see a battered but still flying American flag waving in the sunrise. So inspired was Key that he wrote the poem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Set to a tune attributed to John Stafford Smith,it became America’s national anthem in 1931.

Music & the Brain

Today, the research emerging from the cognitive sciences gives us useful information to explain those connections. As a result of technology, which allows us to see the human brain while it is in the process of thinking, we can observe that when people listen to melodies with a variety of pitch and timbre, the right hemisphere of the brain is activated.

It also “lights up” when people play music by ear. When, however, people learn to read music, understand key signatures, notation  and are able to follow the sequence of notes, then the left hemisphere “lights up.” Significantly, it is activated in the same area that is involved in analytical and mathematical thinking. Research has shown that music instruction can help you with advancing your critical thinking and increase your test scores!
